7 easy ways to keep healthy this summer

Posted on

Summer is without doubt the easiest season to be healthy. If you’re considering starting exercise or overhauling a bad diet, there is no better time to start. Blessed with longer days and warmer weather, the summertime is the time to make some easy changes to your lifestyle and actually enjoy making them.

Here are easy ways to keep healthy this summer:

Get outdoors

Long light nights, sunshine and warm weather make it a pleasure to get outdoors and wear less restricting clothing.  Try and go for a walk at least once a day to make the most of this season.  Even a walk around your neighbourhood to admire everyone’s beautiful flower filled front gardens is great exercise and will boost your mood.

Drink more water

It’s not hard to drink more water when the weather is sweltering.  It’s important to stay hydrated and the warm weather makes us want to reach for those eight glasses per day.  Water is also refreshing and good for our skin, which is perfect as we bare more flesh in skimpier clothing this season.

Quit smoking

I used to be a smoker and I always found I wanted to smoke less in the summer months, which makes it the perfect time to quit.  Smoking is so harmful to your health and those around you.  Quitting smoking is one of the best things I’ve ever done.  I am very anti-smoking now.  If you are struggling to quit, have you considered vaping?  Check out websites such as www.redvape.com as vaping is around 95% safer than normal cigarettes according to Public Health England.  Make vaping your first step to quitting.

Top up your vitamin D

We get most of our vitamin D from the sun, so it’s a great idea to spend some time in the sunshine without protection on to top up our levels.  I once read pale skin needs approximately 20 minutes in the sun per day and darker skin up to 45 minutes.

Use sun cream

As much as we do need vitamin D from the sunshine, it’s best not to spend too long without sun cream on as the rays can be harmful.  Make sure you’re protected with a high factor natural sun cream and always remember to reapply throughout the day, especially after swimming.

Eat more salad

Eating salad is never a chore in the summer as the water filled veg helps quench our thirst too.  I crave salads almost daily when it’s scorching outside.  Chop some lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and onion, toss in olive oil and feta cubes for a delicious Greek style salad.

Make fruit ice lollies

If you’re craving sugar filled ice cream, STOP!  Make your own healthy ice lollies by blending fresh summer berries such as strawberries and raspberries with water and freezing in ice lolly moulds.  These will keep you cool and satisfy those sweet cravings.
